How Long Do I Have To Wait? How long do I have to wait? It’s one of the most often-asked questions. A simple answer is difficult because with adoption, there are many choices, and so many variables. The wishes of future birth parents must be taken into consideration, as well as your flexibility in terms of the type of child you wish to adopt. Each adoption is unique, and so too is the length of your adoption process. For many reasons, we simply can't guarantee if or when a birth mother would select someone as the adoptive parent for her child. Some potential adoptive parents want to have a home study done so that they can proceed with efforts to find a birth mother through their own contacts. Except for some out of the ordinary circumstances, we prefer to work only with those families where we have done the home study or have updated the home study and families have attended our educational classes. This enables Sunny Ridge to understand your preferences and present you more accurately to our birth parents. Our placements in the domestic program over recent calendar years: | Year | Other | Caucasian | African American /Bi-Racial | Total Placements | | 2006 | 4 | 15 | 8 | 27 | | 2005 | 0 | 15 | 7 | 22 | | 2004 | 1 | 25 | 8 | 34 | | 2003 | -- | 22 | 16 | 38 | | 2002 | 1 | 20 | 9 | 30 | | 2001 | -- | 20 | 7 | 27 |
About 75 percent of our domestic adoptions result when a birth parent with whom we have been working selects an adoptive family from among profiles of families who have gone through our home study process. We also facilitate identified adoptions, where adoptive parents locate their birth mother through advertising, personal contacts, or the services of another organization. Another frequently asked question is, "When can the home study begin? Can we get started right away?" The answer is yes, we can start your home study fairly soon, if that is your desire. However, obtaining a home study does not guarantee the placement of a child; and unless you are pursuing an identified adoption, having a home study may not speed up the timetable for your adoption. We also suggest that you check to see if your family medical insurance plan would be able to assume some of the medical costs incurred by the birth of a child to be adopted. Some businesses provide their employees with an "adoption benefit" that helps to offset your costs. It is our experience that these resources have enabled some adopting parents to financially afford to adopt a child, which may not have been otherwise possible because of unusually high medical bills. |
